The Civil Code of the Kingdom of Cambodia, promulgated by Royal Kram No. NS/RKM/0511/007 dated 31 May 2011, constitutes the fundamental legal framework governing private legal relationships between individuals and legal entities.
This Code hereby sets forth the general principles governing civil law relationships. Except as otherwise provided through special laws, the provisions of this Code shall govern matters relating to property and familial relationships. The code regulates matter including contracts, property ownership, family and marriage, inheritance, and civil liability, while clearly defining the rights and obligations of the parties concerned. By codifying these rules within a single, comprehensive legal instrument, the Civil Code enhances legal certainty, fairness, and predictability in the resolution of disputes. Furthermore, it contributes to social stability and economic development by fostering confidence in private transactions and by modernizing and harmonizing Cambodia’s civil law system in accordance with international legal principles and Cambodian social values.
